Secret Service: The Creation

The secret service division was created on July 5, 1865 in Washington DC. Most people today believe the Secret Service was created to protect the President of The United States, but in fact it was created to limit counterfeit currency.

The first Chief was Chief William P. Wood who was sworn in by the Secretary of the Treasury at the time Hugh McCulloch.
After being initially formed to suppress counterfeit currency, the division was tasked to "detecting persons perpetrating frauds against the government." Some of the examples of these persons include: Ku Klux Klan, non-conforming distillers, smugglers and land frauds among many others. The were never publicly acknowledged as a division of the Treasury Department until 1883.
In 1984 the Secret Service began informal part-time protection of President Cleveland. This came by pressure from Mrs. Cleveland. There were several assassination attempts on previous Presidents some thwarted and some completed as in President Lincolns assassination.

Although some Presidents would have army units protect them there was no official bodyguard service until 1984, and still only on a part-time basis.
The informal protection began with escorting the President in public such as car rides and social events. Between 1894 and 1900 many leaders of powerful nations were murdered, the President of France, the Premier of Spain, the Empress of Austria and the King of Italy.
Concerned for the protection of the President, the bodyguard division increased its number of guards and directed that secret service agents go with him on all of his trips. Still the Secret Service was not protecting the President at all times.

Following the assassination of President McKinley and the third assassination of a President, in 1902 the Secret Service assumed full-time responsibility for the safety of the President. Protecting the President became one of it's main functions.

The bodyguard division still didn't receive funding until 1907 when the Sundry Civil Expenses Act passed. After many more years and passed bills the Secret Service is now responsible for the protection of not only the President and Vice President and there families, but also President and Vice President elects and former President's and families.
On top of protecting The President, they are responsible for the protection of visiting heads or other official guests.

They were transferred in 2003 to be under the head of the Department of Homeland Security. As duties and responsibilities have grown over the years. Since 2003 the Secret Service has made nearly twenty-nine thousand criminal arrests for counterfeiting, cyber and financial crimes.
They have seized more than $295 million in counterfeit currency and prevented a loss of more than $12 billion.

So if you were like me and think all the Secret Service does is protect the President then I hope I have enlightened you with the truth. Not only are these people great Bodyguards they also protect the country in which they serve on many levels.
